Here's the real story...sadly. Not my choice but something I was forced to deal with.
We had Jimmy on Show #159 and it was just like any other day. Keep in mind that we've been doing this podcast for 3+ years and we already had permission and everything had always been out in the open and talked about, so we didn't think that there was a problem. Jimmy came over…we did the show…we edited it, released it and went about our weekend.
Some time over the weekend…shit started to hit the fan. I got a text from Jimmy on Sunday that said that we all had a meeting with Linda, our biggest boss, directly after the show on Monday. I asked "Why?" Jimmy said that she had received an email from a lady named "Kelly Miller" and that she had complained about the content of "A Mediocre Time." She went on to say that her 14 year old daughter had "gone to Google to search for Marc Mero's Champions of Choices" and then happened upon "AMT" through a link that she found.
Tom and I started to get really concerned and this was odd because, AGAIN, we had been doing the show for 3 full years with no issues. Why now?
After the show on Monday we all went into Linda office; me, Tom, Jimmy, Russ, Chris (another manager) and Katherine Brown who was the acting PD at the time. Linda read the email and even played a clip of the show that this "Kelly Miller" had supplied her with through her email. "Kelly Miller" went on to say that she was going to email all of our sponsors in an attempt to get them to not advertise with the station anymore. (This was odd, since most people know that both shows have nothing to do with each other.) Linda went on to say that we could not use that kind of language and then demanded that we remove all of the shows, all 159 of them, from both iTunes and from TomandDan.com. During this meeting, Russ went on to tell Linda how he "knew that something like this was going to happen" and said that he had talked to us about how we should not be doing the podcast. (This was a lie. I have only had one conversation with him regarding the podcast and that was about 3 years ago at a friends house and he acted supportive and said that he thought it was cool.)
So we all got our marching orders and just like that, we thought that the podcast was done. Keep in mind that during the entire meeting, Russ sat in there and pretended like he knew this was going to happen and did his best acting job to seem like this had all come as a surprise to him. We got back to our T&D studio and started drinking beer and I'd be lying if I didn't tell you that we knew that something was stinking to high heaven.
The beauty of emails these days is that they show a record of your IP address and we just happen to have an actual copy of the original email that "Kelly Miller" sent to our bosses. Needless to say, we traced the email and it went directly back to Russ' street. Not only that, but he and his wife had been stalking our website from every single device that they had in their home. The funny thing about websites too is that you can watch who goes in and out and there are records of all of this going on. We compiled all of the info that we had that proved he (and his wife) were the people that wrote the email and then we confronted him. I also presented all of this info to my mangers at Real Radio. Russ lied and said that he had nothing to do with it, which was lame and totally expected because that's the type of person he is. The higher ups at Real didn't give a damn what was going on, they knew that this was completely fucked up but there was nothing that they were going to do because they just wanted the "wheels back on the radio bus" and for things to just keep on trucking.
It gets better.
With all of that going on, Tom and I decided that we were going to resign from Real Radio because of the way that Russ was treating us. Our wives were scared that this guy was going to keep attacking us and so we put that plan in place. We both wrote letters of resignation for May of last year (2012) and turned them in. This prompted Katherine and Chris (both of our biggest mangers) to call a meeting with both me and Tom at Sam Sneads in Maitland. At this point we didn't know what the hell was going on, we just knew that we had both resigned and we told them that we would train anyone that they wanted to take our place but that we couldn't work with Russ anymore if he was going to do these types of crazy things. They took us to dinner and told us that they were not going to accept our resignation letters and that if we pressed the issue with it that they were going to fire TC and then sue me for all of the money that they would have made off of both of us. They said that we were still under contract and that they didn't care what anyone was doing…we had better just get back to work.
Obviously I calmed them down and worked until the end of my contract but that's why I said that I would NEVER sign another deal with them. I said that I would work but why the hell would I sign another deal with no way to protect myself from Russ and his crazy wife from trying to fuck with me, Tom and our podcast? Insane and hurtful considering that I was nothing but loyal to that guy…even though we might not have agreed on everything…I NEVER attacked him or did anything underhanded in an attempt to fuck his life up. This was beyond too far. Now he was messing with my life, my job, my family.
So…I think that's about it. I had to leave. He's the worst person that I've met and it was imperative that I get our of that sick, sick, environment. He's a sad and amazingly jealous person that couldn't stand the fact that we have something really, really good here. And one last terrible thing...not even a week later, it got back to us that his wife was bragging about helping to write the letter to people at the station. Unreal and sad. You're talking about people's lives, man. This is not a cartoon or a joke...and no one worked harder there than me.
